Module 2 - Joining/Building

In this module, Relationship Focused Practice, the principles of "joining with," research-based guidelines for developing trusting and supportive relationships between providers and clients, are explained and demonstrated.

The role that adult attachment experiences can play in meeting the needs of the child are explained. Providers will learn how to become a "secure base" for their client and will view a prenatal "joining interview" where these principles are demonstrated. "Ways of being" with the client in order to promote trust and security are also discussed and then demonstrated in a postpartum joining interview. Providers will be given examples of "open ended questions" to encourage trust and autonomy as well as strategies for encouraging treatment follow-up. Includes clips from a sample screening interview with an Hispanic woman posing as a First Steps client and downloadable suggestions for pre- and post-natal interviews. Includes a learning activity with a partner.
