Module 1 - Overview
In this first module, Understanding and Assisting Women with Perinatal and Postpartum Mood Disorders, providers will learn about the prevalence of "Baby Blues" and postpartum mood disorders (both forms of perinatal depression), how providers can be sensitive to cultural differences in detecting the most severe conditions, and what can happen to both mothers and babies when severe depression or mood disorders are left untreated. Different approaches to recovery and treatment are discussed and mothers who have recovered from severe depression tell their stories, including women of color. Two downloadable videos created by Parents Trust complete the module. The first, Speak Up When You're Down, offers an overview of postpartum depression as a woman describes her experience. The second, An Interview with Kathryn Barnard, RN, PhD, offers additional insights into the causes, symptoms and treatment of perinatal depression from an award-winning nurse scientist and internationally recognized expert on early infant development.
